Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra: Summer Symphony Season (2017)

The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra’s Summer Symphony Season includes four symphony concerts at Cape Town City Hall.

Before the season begins, the Friends of Orchestral Music are hosting a gala concert. Conductor Bernhard Gueller will lead the orchestra in Reznicek’s Overture to Donna Diana, Massenet’s Meditation for Thais, and Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2. Zuill Bailey is the soloist in Saint-Saëns’s Cello Concerto No. 1.

The season then begins on Thursday 9 November with conductor Martin Panteleev leading the orchestra in Smetana’s Overture to The Bartered Bride and Brahms’s  Symphony No. 1. Sophie Pacini is the soloist in Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

On Thursday 16 Novemer, Panteleev returns to lead the orchestra in Tchaikovsky’s Marche Solennelle “Coronation March” and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10. Valentina Lisitsa is the soloist in Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.

On Thursday 23 November, Panteleev leads the orchestra in Enesco’s Rumanian Rhapsody No. 1, Chausson’s Poème, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1. Erzhan Kulibaev is the soloist in Glazunov’s Violin Concerto.

On Thursday 30 November, conductor Brandon Phillips takes over for the final concert, which includes Kristi Boonzaaier’s ‘An Evening On Simonsberg’ and Brahms’s Symphony No.3. David Aladashvili is the soloist in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3.
